Girl group Red Velvet debuted in 2014 with four members and welcomed member Yeri in 2015 to make the five-member system it has now.
Red Velvet has three meanings to its name: Red symbolizes a powerful and classic side of the group, Velvet is an expression of the softer side, and Red Velvet is the cross between the two images. Songs are released under three different concepts, such as the debut title "Happiness" (2014) under Red and "Russian Roulette" (2016) under Red Velvet.
One of the most popular girl groups of the late 2010s, Red Velvet had the unique chance of performing at the Pyongyang Grand Theatre in North Korea in 2018 as a part of the celebration for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. Eleven different groups of musicians took part in the performance.
The group is active altogether, but individual members have also been pursuing solo and unit careers, such as Irene and Seulgi's EP "Monster" (2020), Wendy's EP "Like Water" (2021), Joy's special remake album "Hello" (2021) and Seulgi's solo EP "28 Reasons" (2022).
Is Red Velvet disbanding?
No official news has come from SM Entertainment regarding the bandmates' contracts. If their contracts were written based on the 7-year rule, four members would have needed to discuss their contracts in 2021, and Yeri would have started talks this year. But the band still acts as a whole group without any sign of disbanding or news of contract renewals. Fans suspect it may be because SM Entertainment writes longer contracts than other agencies, likely 10 years, or because the agency began talks this year so that all members sit at the negotiating table together. Is Joy dating?
Yes, Joy has been dating singer Crush. Her agency confirmed last year that the two got close while working on Crush's single "Mayday" in May 2020. (https://koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/2021/08/23/entertainment/kpop/Red-Velvet-Crush/20210823160100839.html) (2022.09.12)
