'Avatar: The Way of Water' continues to top local box office
“Avatar: The Way of Water,” the mega sequel to “Avatar,” continued to top the Korean box office over the weekend with a total of 1.2 million audiences as of Monday.
“Avatar: The Way of Water” recorded a cumulative audience of 7,742,000 between Dec. 30 to Jan. 2, the third week of its release, according to the integrated computer network for movie theater tickets from the Korean Film Council.
The domestic cumulative sales from the Avatar sequel is 95.8 billion won ($75.3 million) from the first three weeks after its release.
The sequel is enjoying success in overseas box offices as well. “Avatar: The Way of Water” earned $63.4 million in the third week of its release, according to Box Office Mojo. The cumulative box office revenue in North America so far is $440.5 million, and the global cumulative box office profits from the film is $1.4 billion.
At the domestic box office, “Hero,” a musical film depicting the assassination of Ito Hirobumi by Ahn Jung-guen and the story of his martyrdom in Korea came in second place, recording a cumulative audience of 1.67 million by the twelfth day of its release.
In third place at Korean box offices was the Japanese young adult film “Even If This Love Disappears Tonight,” by director Takahiro Miki. The film is seeing a steady response, recording 700,000 audiences within the month after its release.
