The highly-anticipated sci-fi blockbuster “Space Sweepers” will be released in the form of a webtoon on Daum and Kakao Page on Wednesday.

“Space Sweepers” is the first-ever local sci-fi blockbuster which is set in the year 2092. Director Jo Sung-hee is also behind the hit romantic fantasy film “A Werewolf Boy” (2012), which actors Song Joong-ki and Park Bo-young featured in. This marks Jo's second collaboration with Song, along with the star-studded cast of Kim Tae-ri, Yoo Hae-jin and Jin Seon-kyu.

Before the film’s release in summer, the distribution company Merry Christmas and Kakao Page formed a partnership to expand the film’s intellectual property (IP) through various story formats.

The upcoming webtoon series is the first of the two companies’ collaborative projects to be launched.

“'Space Sweepers' is setting a precedent of investing into its IP from the very beginning of developing the film script,” Kakao Page stated. “It’s not merely a video format of a webtoon or vice versa. We plan to build our own ‘IP Universe’ through this [property].”
