'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' tops Korean box office

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” topped the Korean box office the first weekend after its release.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” based on the popular console game Super Mario, saw 614,000 moviegoers over the weekend and landed at No. 1 on the box office, according to the integrated computer network of theater tickets from the Korean Film Council. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” released on April 26.

Director Lee Byeong-heon’s new film “Dream,” starring Park Seo-joon and IU, gathered 381,000 audience members over the weekend and ranked second in the box office. “Dream” is a comedy film based on the real story of an amateur football team consisting of homeless people entering the Homeless World Cup, a football championship joined by other homeless football teams around the world.

“John Wick 4” starring Keanu Reeves, which had kept the top spot at the box office for the previous two weeks in a row, fell to third place last weekend with 220,000 viewers.

Japanese animation “Suzume” stood at fourth place in the box office over the weekend with 134,000 viewers and a cumulative 5.1 million viewers.
