'Broker' to hit local theaters on June 8

“Broker" will premiere on June 8, according to CJ ENM on Thursday.

Starring veteran actors Song Kang-ho, Gang Dong-won and Bae Doo-na “Broker” follows a group of characters who embark on a journey to find a new family for a baby who was found in a so-called "baby box."

In Korea, a baby box (most often found in front of community churches) is a place for parents to leave their babies when they feel they cannot raise the child.

Song plays Sang-hyun, a man who calls himself a broker of goodwill. Gang plays Sang-hyun's partner Dong-soo. Bae plays Su-jin, a detective who follows Sang-hyun and Dong-soo's journey.

Actors Lee Joo-Young and Lee Ji-eun (better known as singer-songwriter IU) have also been cast as a junior detective and a mother who placed her child in the baby box but has come back for the baby.

“Broker” is directed by Hirokazu Koreeda. It is the Japanese director's first attempt at producing a Korean movie.

The film has also been invited to compete for the Palme d’Or at the upcoming 75th Cannes Film Festival. The event is slated to be held from May 17 to 28 in Cannes, France.
