✨Album of the Year with "Kill My Doubt"
ITZY is a five-member girl group that debuted in February 2019 as the fourth girl group from JYP Entertainment, following Wonder Girls, miss A and Twice.
The five-member girl group has been pursuing a "girl-crush" concept since its debut track, "DALLA DALLA." The phrase "girl-crush" is used to describe powerful women who are considered role models for young, teenage girls to have a light crush on, rather than a feminine or innocent concept that many girl groups have gone for in the past.
The theme is evident throughout its discography that's been donning the teenage confidence and a softer take on rebellious punk in songs such as "Cheshire" (2022), "Mafia in the Morning" (2021), "Wannabe" (2020) and "Not Shy" (2020).
Following the footsteps of Twice, an immensely popular girl group in Japan, ITZY also made a crushing debut in Japan with "IT'z ITZY" in December 2021. The band released its first English single, "Not Shy," in January 2021.
Why is ITZY called ITZY?
ITZY, when spelled in Korea is itji, which means "to have." The group's name symbolizes that the group has everything that is required for a K-pop group: the groove, the vocals, the dance, the performance and the visuals. The fandom's name, MIDZY, is another play on Korean. In Korean, the word mitji means "to trust," which means that the club trusts in the band and the band can trust in the fan club to always have their backs. (2022.09.09)
What is ITZY's concept?
They debuted with "teenage charms," rather than a feminine or innocent concept that many girl groups have gone for in the past. The so-called "girl crush" concept became a new trend starting in the mid-2010s with girl groups 4Minute, Blackpink and Twice, incorporating a tomboy-ish look with feminine touches. So rather than a love song, their debut track, "DALLA DALLA," was all about the band's uniqueness they aimed to flaunt in the K-pop scene. (2022.09.09)
