Kinemafactory announced on Friday that its film “8 Suspects,” directed by Oh In-chun, has been invited to the 55th WorldFest-Houston International Festival in the United States.

The film festival, founded in 1968 by producer and director Hunter Todd, is the third longest-running and oldest independent film festival in the world. Renowned film directors like John Lee Hancock, Steven Spielberg, Ang Lee and David Winning are notable alumni of the festival. The festival presents awards in 10 major film and video categories as well as more than 200 subcategories.

“8 Suspects” has been nominated for the “Remi Award.” It’s the only Korean film among 30 feature films nominated in the category.

“Paper Flower,” which stars veteran actor Ahn Sung-ki received the platinum Remi Award and Best Actor Award at the 53rd edition of the event in 2020. The Platinum Remi Award is equivalent to Best Foreign Language Film.

“It would have been absolutely impossible [to be nominated] without the passion and talent of those who worked with me for this film,” said director Oh through the production company. “All the actors and staff gave their all, especially during exceptionally fickle weather and unpredictable Covid-19 situation.”

“8 Suspects” is a historical mystery film that centers around eight elites of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), who get accused of being spies to disrupt Joseon’s independence from Japan’s occupation.

The film is slated to hit local theaters in the latter half of this year.
