[CELEB] Yura of Girl's Day talks the role she'll never forget

In JTBC's rom-com series "Forecasting Love and Weather" (2022), actor and singer Yura plays Chae Yoo-jin, a weather reporter for a daily newspaper. She received positive reviews from viewers for portraying the joys and sorrows of being a 20-something newlywed with a fast-paced career.

Yura, who is best known as a member of girl group Girl’s Day, told Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, that the show was a turning point in her acting career after its finale on Sunday.

“Forecasting Love and Weather,” which is available on Netflix, centers around the love lives of people working at the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). Yura's character Yoo-jin has just married Han Ki-joon, played by actor Yoon Park. What should be a time full of love instead turns into a struggle with Yoo-jin caught between her work life and her private life.

When asked which scene with Ki-joon she had the strongest reaction to, Yura said she was upset in the scene when her character tells Ki-joon she is pregnant.

“Ki-joon’s facial expression and his [negative] reaction to the news was very hurtful, especially because of his line ‘It wasn’t in the plan,’” Yura said. “I even called him up before shooting that scene to complain to him, ‘How could you do this?’ He totally agreed with me. I really thought that scene was cruel.”

Despite some tough scenes, Yura said “Forecasting Love and Weather” is a drama she will always remember because it helped her to “get a bit greedier about becoming a better actor.”

Although Yura, whose real name is Kim Ah Yeong, has been acting since 2012, she is better known as a member of Girl’s Day. The group debuted in July 2010 with the EP “Girl’s Day Party #1.” At first the group had five members: Jihae, Jisun, Jiin, Sojin and Minah, but just two months after debuting, Jisun and Jiin left the group and current members Yura and Hyeri were added to replace them.

Yura’s first music as part of Girl’s Day was the lead track “Nothing Lasts Forever” of the EP “Girl’s Day Party #2” (2010). The song earned mediocre reviews.

In March 2011, the group started seeing popularity with its song, “Twinkle Twinkle.” However, subsequent songs, like “Hug Me Once” (2011), “Don’t Flirt” (2011) and “Oh! My God” (2012) did not appeal as much to the general public. In 2012, Jihae left the group and Girl’s Day solidified as a quartet with Sojin, Minah, Yura and Hyeri.

Girl’s Day finally made its breakthrough with the song “Expectation” in 2013.

The song ended the group’s cute image that it had maintained ever since its debut and showed off a sexier and more mature side of the members. “Expectation” was especially popular for its choreography.

Girl’s Day achieved greater fame with its seductive songs like “Female President” (2013), “Something” (2014) and “Ring My Bell” (2015). Billboard named “Female President” one of the 20 best K-pop songs of 2013.

The members started focusing more on solo activities and the EP “Everyday #5” (2017) with the lead track “I’ll Be Yours” was its last music released as a group.

The members have never explicitly said that the group has broken up, but they did go their separate ways after their contracts with Dream T Entertainment ended in 2019. In July 2020, the members uploaded pictures on their Instagrams, showing them celebrating Girl’s Day’s 10th anniversary of its debut altogether.
