Girl group Billlie releases first full-length album 'the collective soul and unconscious: chapter two'
For girl group Billlie, its first full-length album, “the collective soul and unconscious: chapter two,” is a reflection of self — scattered across different colors and shapes, but ultimately coming together as one whole.
“The core message behind the songs we are presenting this time is that one side of me is just as much a part of myself as any other side,” said member Sheon during a press showcase for the latest album held at SBS Prism Tower in Mapo District, western Seoul, on Wednesday.
“What we wanted to say is that this version of me is me, and that version of me is me too, so whatever form I take, I should love myself as I am.”
Billlie debuted in October 2021, consisting of seven members: Siyoon, Sheon, Tsuki, Moon Sua, Haram, Suhyeon and Haruna.
The girl group’s latest release, “the collective soul and unconscious: chapter two,” marks its first full-length release in its career, and is the second installment in the series following its 2022 EP, which featured the lead single — and the girl group’s biggest hit to date — “GingaMingaYo” (2022). In the years between, Billlie explored other series, most recently with its fifth EP, “appendix: Of All We Have Lost,” released in October 2024. That makes the latest release the group’s first new album in more than a year.
“The biggest change we made with this album is that we’ve boldly explored various genres and interpreted those in our own unique ways,” said Suhyeon. “And we also wanted to convey the message to encourage people to embrace their true selves, instead of being swayed by outside noises.”
The full-length album consists of 12 songs: the lead tracks “Zap” and “Work,” B-sides, “$ecret no more,” “TBD,” “B’yond me,” “Soupasta,” and “Off-Air,” along with “Zap (ultraviolet remix),” “Work (anonymous remix),” “Soupasta (unconscious remix),” “cloud palace (collective soul remix)” and the Korean version of its Japanese single, “Domino ~ butterfly effect.”
“Zap,” according to Billlie, is a post-hyper pop track marked by its fast-paced, experimental beat progression and energetic chorus. The other lead track, “Work,” is a hybrid pop built on bass house sound and industrial hip-hop.
Moon is credited for taking part in writing the lyrics for “Work” and “$ecret no more.” Along with Moon, members Siyoon and Haram are also credited for contributing to writing lyrics in the B-side “TBD.”
“We talked a lot among ourselves about how we would be able to better present Billlie to the wider audience,” said Moon. “The members participated more actively in the production process than before, which led to an album that showcases Billlie’s identity well.”
Throughout its discography, Billlie has expanded its versatility through experimental sound and choreography, and the members hope to continue broadening its scope.
“There is so much more of us we want to show the public,” said Moon. “We love to challenge our own limits — and we realized once again how wide our spectrum can be with the new album. I hope you will continue to look forward to what we do next.”
